Trainings
VTA+ trainings are designed to rapidly and effectively train a large, diverse workforce to respond to COVID-19 in California. Our trainings are offered to employees of Local Health Jurisdictions and state employees. Some of our trainings are offered in both English and Spanish. In addition to our core trainings, the VTA+ and our partners offer other opportunities.
Core Trainings
Cultural Humility (CH)
Learn the core principles of Cultural Humility and how to apply them towards respectful and effective engagement with diverse communities impacted by COVID-19.
This training is for Local Health Jurisdiction (LHJ) and state employees who are working.


Essential Interview Skills for Disease Investigation (EISDI)
Learn to facilitate disease intervention interviews effectively and successfully using universal interview components, strengths-based approaches and harm reduction, examining bias, motivational interviewing, demographic and data collection.
This training is for Local Health Jurisdiction and state employees who will be working in the area of outbreak management of COVID-19.
Mpox Disease Intervention Training (MPOX)
Learn to perform effective disease intervention interviews for mpox. This training builds on the Essential Interviewing Skills for Disease Intervention (EISDI) course and aims to apply course skills and knowledge to the complexities and nuances specifically related to mpox.
This training is for Local Health Jurisdiction (LHJ) and state employees who will be facilitating disease intervention interviews for mpox with members of the public.

Outbreak Management (OMG)
Gain skills and knowledge for outbreak investigation and management to control the transmission and spread of infectious diseases, such as COVID-19.
This training is for Local Health Jurisdiction and state employees who will be who will be facilitating disease intervention interviews with members of the public during telephone interviews.
Vaccine Communications (VAX)
Learn to effectively communicate information about COVID-19 vaccines during telephone interviews by understanding barriers and enablers, common FAQs, and health coaching skills.
This training is for Local Health Jurisdiction (LHJ) and state employees who will be working in the area of COVID-19 vaccine outreach and communication.


Case Investigation & Contact Tracing (CICT)
This VTA flagship course has trained over 10,000 Covid-19 case investigators and contact tracers since 2020. In response to evolving disease intervention needs, CICT is retired as a stand-alone training.
Interview skill training will be provided through the newly developed Essential Interviewing Skills for Disease Intervention training launching in February 2023. COVID-specific information will be transitioned to a disease-specific course which will be available in March or April 2023.

CA Public Health Corps (CA-PHC) is an innovative program that provides training, hands-on work experience, and ongoing support to create a pathway into the field of public health.
California Public Health Reserve Corps
The California Public Health Reserve Corps (PHRC) are employee volunteers from CA state departments trained to provide critical support during public health emergencies.
