COVID-19 Disease Intervention

The goal of this course is to prepare local health jurisdiction staff and state employees to conduct COVID-19 disease intervention interviews. During this course, learners will revisit the universal interview components (UIC), learn about the nuances to a COVID-19 interview, and how to apply motivational interviewing techniques to client interviews. The skills and techniques learned during this course can be applied during interviews to ensure information is effectively communicated.

This is an asynchronous training. This means that you’ll be able to complete the training at any time that is convenient for you. Please confirm with your supervisor if you have a deadline to complete the course.

  • This course includes approximately 2.5 hours of online self-study with no live meeting.
  • The online self-study introduces COVID-19 epidemiology and components of a COVID-19 disease intervention interview.

All participants who successfully complete the training will receive a Record of Completion. This will become available on the COVID-19 Disease Intervention course page once all required components have been marked complete.

Training Course Information

Audience/Who Should Register:  This course is intended for persons who will be performing COVID-19 disease intervention work in the state of California, including:

  • Existing staff of local health districts.
  • Existing State employees deployed to the COVID-19 response.

Prior training and work experience in public health is not required.

Length of Training: This training includes 2.5 hours of self-study. There is no live meeting.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Effectively communicate standardized recommendations and policies about COVID-19 epidemiology, treatment, isolation, testing and social support;
  • Recognize the unique components of a disease intervention interview for COVID-19; and
  • Apply motivational interviewing techniques, including health coaching tools, during a COVID-19 interview.
